The best skippers in this royal class, how many refer to it, will be joined not only by the competitors from countries of the Old continent, but by many leading competitors from all over the world, since this regatta offers competition in open category as well. Before they come together, organisational commitee and the competitors will have a chance to test themselves 2 months prior to competiton at the traditional Split Olympic Sailing Week.
Many are familiar with this regatta by its old name – Adriatic Grand Prix, however the new image has been established alongside the new name. Joint effort by four yacht clubs from Split, including Labud, Mornar, Split and Zenta has yielded an exquisite regatta event scheduled to happen at the beginning of March (March 17 – 20, 2010), right at the brink of the new sailing season for most olympic classes. At the race course, leading Croatian skippers will compete in Finn class, followed by Laser, 470, Star and 49er, and will be joined by a great number of competitors in windsurfing as well.
Our national hopes are expected to be joined by a vast number of foreign competitors, especially from finn class, who will make an appearance at the European championship in May (May 08 – 16, 2010), at the identical race course, so SOSW would be a perfect opportunity to put the weather and the opponents to a test. Among oponents it is indispensable to mention Ivan Kljaković-Gašpić, the legendary Bambi, the current holder of the european title, world championship bronze medal winner and first ranked skipper on the ISAF finn rankings.
Additionaly, numerous teams from northern countries, that often train in Split, will sail forth at the Split Olympic Week. Great logistics, favourable weather conditions and warm climate alongside competitive sparring opportunities with Croatian skippers make Split an ideal place for sailing camps.
So everything is about to steam up in March, right before the big sailing celebration that awaits us in May – at finn competition.
