Having only just said goodbye to the 97 Finns at the European Championship, YC Labud in Split, Croatia is now beginning to welcome even more Finns for the 2010 Finn World Masters, which will open at the weekend.

The preliminary entry list includes 190 sailors from 23 nations. Though down on last year's record entry of 264, this is still up 60 boats on the last time the event was held in Split, in 2002.

Some of the Masters also took part in the Europeans last week as well to familiarise themselves with the wind and the local conditions, though we hope the Masters are more lucky with the weather than the Junior and Senior sailors were last week.

The favourite has to be the three times winner and defending champion Andre Budzien (GER) though 2006 winner Michael Maier (CZE) is also on the preliminary entry list and should provide a strong challenge.

While it is always hard to predict winners at the Masters, previous form would indicate that the likes of Jürgen Eiermann (GER) - runner up last year; Mihail Kopanov (BUL), runner up in 2008; and Allen Burrell (GBR) - third in 2005 and 2007 are also likely to be serious challengers.

Split also has a strong local Finn fleet, which has been putting in a lot of time on the water, so they will be keen to capitalise on their training and local knowledge.

Measurement and registration opens Friday is followed by the first races on Monday 24 May with eight races scheduled until Friday 28 May.

Measurement has started today - some 40 sailors has allready confirmed the registration. In the meantime some Masters are enjoying the moderate northeasterly on the water.  Lots of competitors are still on their way to Split. At the moment forecast fort the next week is fine - moderate wind from west and south west.

At the moment we can expect light and moderate winds and sunny days till penultimate day of racing - exactly what majority of Masters was hoping for...

Dear sailors,
With special pleasure I present you YC Labud and on behalf of our members and especially Finn sailors, I invite you to our club and to Finn World Masters Championship 2010. Already 85 years of organized sailing in our club is worth mentioning. Of course, there has been sailing in these waters throughout our past but although world has significantly changed during the time, devotion and passion for the sea and sailing remain the same, equally strong. That passion knows no borders and speaks all the languages therefore I am sure you will be fine in YC Labud.

Maybe because of the special connection between you, Finn sailors, and us from Labud. Sailing in Labud is all about the Finn sailing from the beginning. Our sailors celebrated the name of the club in the world. Bauman, Fabris, Cicarelli, Kuret,...are only part of our great history and results. Today, that great series continue with youngsters Kljaković-Gašpić Bambi and Mišura. So, being well known to the Finn world is no wonder especially if you know that we already organized top Finn events. European Championship in 1997, Masters in 2002 and Worlds in 2006. The best sailors were always our dear guests and this will be another great year for us all. We begin with Split Olympic Sailing Week in March and then European and World Masters in May. I am sure that you will receive our great hospitality and special atmosphere that we will create together. Top sailing and tension at the race area but at the same time pleasant and friendly before and after the sailing.

Your host city, Split is special place that leaves no one indifferent. Do not miss the opportunity to feel the city’s spirit and its 1700 years of history. So many stories to be told that you will remember for sure. We are sport city with 77 Olympic medal winners from different sports that speak for themselves. Little wonder that will again this year, beside sailing event, present to the world top sport event. Continental cup in Athletics will take place in Split in September when all the best athletes will gather again in Split after 1990 Europeans. Our star Blanka Vlasic will know how to welcome them.

And you?
